Since early 2021, China has implemented several adjustments in trademark filing management. These changes aim to enhance transparency and speed up processing times.
Shorter processing times
One key development is the reduction in substantive examination times, now announced at between 4 and 6 months in most cases. This shift is especially beneficial for foreign exporters looking to quickly secure their brand in the Chinese market.

Stricter enforcement
The CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) has also stepped up its efforts against bad-faith filings, notably through cross-checks and increased monitoring of unusual filing patterns. Specific rules targeting these practices have been issued since 2021.
Toward greater digitalisation
The official Chinese portal offers more and more online services, including access to published trademarks, direct filings, and real-time tracking. Since 2022, registration certificates have been issued exclusively in electronic format.
🔎 In short :
China continues to structure its intellectual property system toward more professional standards. This paves the way for new opportunities for European companies—provided they are well supported.
